The new edition of Star Wars has drawn a lot of attention. One of the things that caught my attention was how skills are dealt with. The new system makes creating NPCs take a lot less time, although it seems to reduce the breadth of skills available, and I can't figure out how multiclassing skills work (I have to wait for the book *sigh*)
On to the point. The new skill system works like this: you don't buy ranks anymore. You get a bonus to a skill equal to half your level (if untrained) or half your level +5 (if trained). Skill Focus gives you a +5 bonus to a single skill. However, there are no other sources of skill bonuses, not even racial bonuses. This means skill DCs can be more easily set, and cranking skill modifiers becomes more difficult.
D20 Modern has multiple ways of boosting skill modifiers; Skill Emphasis, Savant, Charm (male or female), Fast Talk, Empathy, and several Advanced Class abilities, in addition to the skill-boosting feats. I was wondering, if you were to use such a skill system with d20 Modern, what would you do with Skill Focus? Would you let it stack with Savant? Would abilities like Savant be set at +5 instead of scaling with level?
