The following is a generic "legs" fire team.
Fire Team Bruins is a standard infantry unit within the United States Army. (The Bruins can, in turn, represent a fire team from any first world military or from a mercenary company.)
The Bruins are a front-line unit, but they are not an elite unit. Their primary function in an adventure is to pose a small military challenge to relatively low-level PCs or to assist PCs who are working in close concert with military forces. They can be encountered guarding a base, raiding a village, guarding a convoy, patrolling streets, and so forth. They can even be used again and again (but with different names and personalities each time).
Some more elite military organizations use the same formation (such as the US Rangers).
Sergeant Brian "Bacon" Hawking is the Bruins team leader. He is about twenty-five years of age and has held his position for just over a year. He leads from the front, since he must be able to see all the action.
Jose Velasquez is the team's heavy weapons expert and second-in-command.
Jane "Golden" Eagle is the team's grenadier. She is armed with a grenade launcher and eight launchable grenades.
Private Richard Pyle is the newest recruit and the team's radioman. His equipment is as follows:
5.56mm assault rifle with bayonet and 7 magazines (30 rounds each), 4 fragmentation grenades and radio pack (this works like the professional Walk Talkie in the D20 Modern Base Book except it has a range of six miles. Any checks to intercept/jam the signal takes a +20 equipment penalty to the check). He carries the heaviest load of all the soldiers.
He is frequently pressed into service as Velasquez's assitant, loading his machine gun. At other times, he serves the "rear security" role.
The total EL of this fire team is 6. Note that Pyle is hardly a challenge for a 6th-level party; it's more appropriate to use this encounter against lower level PCs (of about 4th-level) in order to more reasonably challenge them. (Award full XP however.)
A typical encounter may involve two fire teams, led by a higher-level sergeant. They will split into two groups, dubbed "alpha" and "beta". "Alpha" group will usually deploy on a hill, and will have all the machine guns and grenade launchers. "Beta" group will be much smaller, and will approach the enemy (such as the PCs) from another direction.
Both groups will use natural cover if possible, and if alpha group has any time to prepare, they will "dig in". Their machine guns will be placed in keyhole positions, and other soldiers will dig shallow foxholes. A foxhole grants a +4 Defense bonus against ranged attacks to prone characters (which stacks with the bonus against ranged attacks from going prone). Given more time, an entire defensive network can be constructed, with multiple deep foxholes and camouflaged shelters.
The characters were made with input from the WotC d20 Modern boards.
